Pilot Cutter I

Pilot cutters are enjoying something of a revival, thanks to the skill and hard work of dedicated boatbuilders. Originally used to deliver maritime pilots to vessels arriving into British waters, these cutters needed to be fast and easy to manoeuvre. The definitive design enabled the boat to withstand all sorts of challenging conditions and it could be sailed by just one man and his apprentice. Nowadays, only 18 of the original pilot cutters survive, but replica vessels are increasingly in demand for their enduring qualities. This one, sitting near the boatbuilders in Penryn, is an object of proven beauty. – Hilary Stock
