Jack and Jill Wall

“In my romantic memory of childhood holidays, I recall wandering down the high-banked, single-tracked Cornish roads. My mother and grandmother were full of laughter and conversation, meandering as if time would go on forever. Such potterings were always full of magic. We would pluck the pennywort out of the banks, and have competitions to see who could make the best ‘balloon’. It was a technique that required delicate handling, but the triumph of squeezing away at the leaf without breaking it – inserting a piece of grass, blowing through it, and making a beautiful little balloon – was memorable. This slate herringbone wall, known locally on the Roseland as a ‘Jack and Jill’,  reminds me of the hours spent searching for just the right pennywort – I still do it today.” – Hilary Stock
